Yangon, which has the largest population of the 14
divisions and states that make up Myanmar, despite occupying
the smallest area (only 3927 square miles), is a lush
respite from most other cities its size.
About five million people call Yangon home, spreading
themselves throughout the city's 52 divisions.
The YANGON River bounds the city on the south and west; the
Pazundaung Chaung does the same on the east. In between
these estuarine city walls, you will find a multitude of
treasures, including Shwedagon Pagoda (in Kipling's words "a
beautiful winking wonder") and Bogyoke Aung San Market. The
city is also lucky enough to have teo lakes within its
borders; Kandawgyi and Inya.
Yangon Division is one of the most fertile delta areas in
Myanmar. Some major destinations are Thanlyin, home of the
Kyeik-hauk and Kyauktan Pagodas and Letkhkkon Beach, known
for its wildlife are well worth a visit.
Letkhokkon Beach in particular offers insights into the
relaxed delta life of the region. The village adjoining the
beach is a typical beach town, with an economy based on
coconuts and seafood.
The lower part of the division is home to many Kayin and
Rakhine, as well as Bamar.
