Thnintharyi Division, Myanmar's southernmost division, is
bordered on the east by Thailand and on the west by the Gulf
of Mottama.
1.3 million people reside in Taintharyi, Spread out over its
fertile 16,736 square miles.
Dawei, the division's capital, a port of medium importance,
is known as a tropical seaside town, a religious centre,
home to bothe Buddhists and Baptists, and the base for the
gas pipelines of Yadana and the gas field of Yetagun.
Myanmar's only marine sanctuary, the Maungman islands are
located in Tanintharyi Division.
More beautiful islands, namely the Myeik Archipelago, are
located on the extreme southern end of the region.
Myeik is one of the few larger towns in the area. Located at
the confluence of the Taninthari and Kyaukpaya Rivers, the
town is home to many Buddhist temples, amoung them the
Theindawgyi Paya.
Kawthoung, another regional port that borders Thailand is
known for its rubber, fishing and cashews, as well as
proximity to the region;s beaches.
When eco-Tourism takes off in Myanmar, Thnintharyi could
well be its birthplace.
