Rakhine State, its 14200 square miles bordering Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal, is home to 2.9 million inhabitants. Sittwe, the state's capital, sits on the Bay of Bengal near the mouth of the Kaladan River. Te city has been inhbited for over 2000 year, although, in its present form, Sittwe has only existed for about 200 years. The city's Buddhist Museum has Myanmar's best collection of Rakhine-style images of Buddha.

Mrauk-U is home to a major asembley of Buddhist stupas and temples. There are over 100 temple, stupa, and city wall structures in Mrauk-U, including the ruins of the former palace, the Shitthoung temple, built in 1535 by King Minbar. one of Rakhine's more powerful kings, Yadanapon Pagoda, and the Sakyamanaung Pagoda.

Ngapali Beach, on the Bay of Bengal, is an emerging international destination. Home of pristine stretches of white sand and clear water, the area is also a wonderful place to relax into the place of traditional seaside life in Myanmar.

Like Taninthatyi Division, Rakhine is home to some of the best beaches in Myanmar.
