Mail4U offers everyone an internet address

A NEW, cheap email service was launched by internet service provider Bagan Cybertech early this month.

The email service, named Mai14U, charges a small annual fee of K8000 for an email account, targeting those who do not have a private email account.

"We sell these Mai14U accounts through resellers who now
total 20," said U Maung Maung Kyaw Thar, marketing manager of Bagan Cybertech.

"Our ambition is to have our Mai14U service resellers in every corner of Yangon so that every resident of the city can use email, said U Maung Maung Kyaw Thar.

Bagan Cybertech, one of two internet service providers in Myanmar along with
Myanma Post and Telecommunication, will not compete with their licebsed resellers in selling Mail4U.

Those who buy a Mail4U account will receive a user name under the domain name @mail4U.com.mm and a pass word.

If email users are under 12 or do not have a national registration card, they must attach their parents' or guardians' consent along with the application form to buy and email account. To be a mail4U reseller, a company must have a dial up or broadband access and lodge a deposit fee of K 100,000 with Bagan Cybertech.

"We judge the applicants for the Mail4U resellers by their location and reputation in the computer industry.""Therefore, the first 20 Mail4U resellers are software companies, hardware sellers, and computer training centres,"said U Maung Maung Kyaw Thar.

Previously, an individual user needed a personal computer, a phone line, a modem and the necessary software to use email. "Under the old system, users had to pay at least K 8,000 per month for up to 10 hours spent on-line," said U Maung MuangKyaw Thar.

"I did not have a private email account so I could not make continuous contact with my overseas shipping agency and my friends who are now on the sea," said Ko Nay Win Thein, a mariner who has bought a Mail4U account. "Now I have an email account and I can make contact with them continuously," he said.

A foreigner who has bought an email account told Myanmar Times: "My mother has an email account and I want to stay in contact with her. That's why I signed up."
