DPS in Media Internet advertising helps firms reach millions ▼

AN INCREASING number of Myanmar companies are turning to the 'world wide web' as an inexpensive advertising medium to promote their service or products, say market sources.

There are more than three million web pages about Myanmar on the internet most of which are about Myanmar hotel and Tourism, import-export companies and handicraft manufacturers.

"The internet enables advertisers to promote their products and services to millions of potential customers through the world wide web," says U Aye Min Oo, Managing Director from Domainame Procurement Service which was established in 1995.

"After posting a website on the internet, most companies are finding they receive many more sales enquiries," said U Aye Min Oo.

There are more than four thousand visitors to Myanmar websites every day and some companies have over 200 'hits' daily, according to their line of business, he said.

"There are already over 800 internet web sites created by our company alone and there are more than 10 companies creating web design in Myanmar, said Ko Aye Min Oo.

"Around the world, there are more than 600 million people using the internet. Advertising on the internet means your company is open for business 24 hours a day ," said marketing manager, Mg Mg Kyaw Thar from Bagan Cybertech, one of only two internet service providers in Myanmar.

"We started our internet service last year with around 100 domain names. Now there are more than 500 domain registrations, he said.

The managing director of a leading web site design company said most local customers liked the idea of having a web presence, but few understand the complexities of creating a successful web site.

Ko Tun Thura Thet, from Myanmar Information Technology Company which was established in June 2000, said web site design and content are vitally important, as the object of the exercise is to encourage visitors to spend as much time as possible at your site before they 'click away' or leave.

"And for those looking to impress on the international market, it is important to note that foreigners tend to pay more attention to attractive web design than local customers," said Ko Tun Thura Thet.

"If the presentation of your website is of a high standard and it is well constructed, it can reach millions of visitors world wide. Compare that with advertising on a billboard, where you can only reach pedestrians and motorists as they pass," he said.

"Another important advantage is that any information posted on a website can be replaced or updated weekly, daily, or even hourly if required," Ko Tun Thura Thet said.

At present, companies who rely on overseas markets such as Tourism operators and handicraft companies represent about 50 per cent of overall demand for website development in Myanmar.
