plenty to see in the division's 14,295 square miles, besides
its main city.
Mandalay, lies in the centre of Myanmar's dry zone, in Upper
Myanmar. 600,000-800,000 of Mandalay Division's seven
million residents live in the capital, making it the second
largest city in Myanmar; it also hosts about 60 per cent of
all the monks in the nation.
Mandalay residents are also purported to speak the best
Myanmar in the country.
The Ayeyarwady River borders city on the north-west. Within
the city boundaries are Mandalay Fort, Mandalay Hill, with
its numerous pagodas (elsewhere in city, several magnificent
churches can be found), and Myanmar culturals shows, such as
pwe troupes and traditional kickboxing.
The four ancient cities of Amarapura, Ava, Sagaing and
Mingun are all within easy day trips from the capital and
offer a fascinating look into Myanmar's past.
Maymyo, original a Shan Damu village and then a British hill
station, is almost as picturesque as ever and home to a a
thriving sweater trade.
Mt. Popa, centre of a now-extinct volcano, sits in the
middle of a fertile plane and is said to be the home of
Myanmar's most important nats.
