Kayah State
is none of the smallest in Myanmar; only a quarter of a
million people live in this eastern enclave of 4530 square
miles.
Kayah's beautiful mountains house numerous tribes; at last
count, at least eitht ethnic groups living in the state.
Among them are the Taungthu, Padaung, Yinbaw, Bre and
majority Kayah.
The Kayahs are a mix of animists, Christian and Buddhists.
The region's most famous religious festival is the Kuhtobo
in May, which celebrates the rain spirits.
The Padaung, celebrated both in Myanmar and around the wourl,
are famous for the brass rings that their women stack around
their necks, elongathing them.
Myanmar are free to visit Kayah State and foreigners may
tour the area, with a permit, up to Loikaw, the capital of
Kayah State and home to a colourful tribal market,
Thirimingala.
Other delights in the area are mountain hikes, Lawpita
Falls, and the Taungkwe Zedi, on Taungkwe mountain.
