MYANMAR DRESS - Burmese dress

Myanmar dress for man consists of a collar-less white shirt with an over coat and longyi - a sarong like piece of cloth. For ladies, it is as usual more complicated. Myanmar ladies prefer silk but fine cotton dresses are also very popular for all ages. Ladies should not wear shorts or bra-less T-shirts. Nowadays Myanmar women, be they young or old, love to wear the skirt-longyis. Myanmar is also hardly avoidable the influences of the western culture like other Asia countries. Myanmar people love to wear Myanmar dresses traditional nether garments - Sarongs or Longyis - although shirts, T-shirts, blouses, jackets, jerkins, cardigans, and the like may be worn as upper garments. Most young people love to wear light and casual dress freely like T-shirt, jeans, etc.

Light causal wears for all year round. A cardigan or light sweater for the cool season especially when visiting upper Myanmar, like Mandalay or Bagan. An umbrella will be useful during the rainy season. Sandals or slippers are convenient as all footwears must be taken off when entering the precincts of pagodas and monasteries. Visitors should not wear shorts or briefs when visiting pagodas and monasteries.

Hats and sunglass are recommended, and an umbrella for the rainy season is a must. Rainy season days often start out sunny but outbursts of rain can be heavy, even if short and frequent.

Should dress decently within the precincts of religious monuments. Light clothing is suitable year round except in hill regions where a sweater or jacket is useful, particularly during winter months as evenings may be quite chilly. Should bring slipper, scandal as they are easy to be removed at the Pagodas, Temples, Monastery and other religious buildings.

An umbrella or raincoat is advisable during the monsoon months. A hat, a pair of sunglass and high-factor block cream is useful when sightseeing. Want to try Myanmar dress! The cost of a cotton longyi is approx 4,500 ~ 5,000 Kyat plus sewing cost 2000 ~ 3000 kyat.
