Bago Division, located just above Yangon Division in the
lower part of Myanmar, is home to some of the most
chivalrous men in the nation.
According to legend, two Mon princes from Thaton founded the
city after seeing a female goose standing on the back of a
male goose in the middle of the lake; since then, men from
Bago have been honoured as compassionate, for like the male
goose, they will let the women walk on their back.
Beside the main town of Bago, site of Kanbawzathadi Palace
and Musuem and several religious sites, including Shwemawdaw
Pagoda, the division is home to the towns of Taungoo, Pyay
and Hmawza.
The division's economy is firmly linked to the timber trade.
Taungoo, in the northern end of the Bago Division, is
bordered by mountain ranges, home to teak and other
hardwoods, to the east and west.
The division is also known for its multitude of area palms,
which produce kunthee, the nut used in betel chews. In
Myanmar, the expression, "the betel-lover is in Taungoo,"
denotes extreme good fortune.
Pyay, today an important shipping town and the site of most
extensive archaelogical work this century, is also home to
two important pagodas: the Shwesandaw and the Sehtatgyi
Five million Myanmar live in Bago Division's 15214 square
miles.
